The update of the Chișinău 2040 General Urban Plan is ongoing. Following the preparation of the 12 Background Studies and four rounds of public consultations, the process is moving forward to the analysis of the comments and recommendations received and the preparation of the next stages of urban planning. How will Chișinău develop by 2040? Where could new residential and economic areas emerge? How will infrastructure, mobility, public services, and heritage protection be integrated? To answer these questions, it is first necessary to gain an in-depth understanding of the city as it stands today. This is precisely why the process of updating the General Urban Plan began with the preparation of the Background Studies, which examine the key components of urban development.

Imagine a perfect Tuesday morning in Chișinău. You wake up, walk your child to kindergarten along a shaded pathway, and stop at the corner café for an espresso on your way home. Before returning, you pick up a parcel from the post office and buy some fresh vegetables. The entire trip takes less than fifteen minutes, and your car keys remain undisturbed on the bedside table. For many of us living in Ciocana, Botanica, Buiucani, or the suburbs, this scenario seems like something out of a utopian film. Our everyday reality often involves spending valuable time behind the wheel or on public transport, watching the minutes tick by along Ștefan cel Mare Boulevard or on streets congested with cars. But what if the problem is not how we travel, but the distances we are forced to cover?

The future of Chișinău is being shaped through dialogue, collaboration, and the involvement of professionals who understand the city’s challenges and development potential. In this context, the process of updating the Chișinău 2040 General Urban Plan continues through exchanges of experience and professional discussions aimed at identifying the most appropriate directions for urban development. One such dialogue took place during the roundtable discussion “Urban Planning Dialogue with Architects – Chișinău 2040: From Vision to Planning”, hosted by the Union of Architects of the Republic of Moldova. The event brought together representatives of local public authorities, the ARHICON Consortium, architects, urban planners, and spatial planning specialists, providing an opportunity for a constructive exchange of views on Chișinău’s current challenges and future development prospects.

Chișinău City Hall continues the update process of the Chișinău 2040 General Urban Plan, a strategic document that will establish the main directions for the city’s urban development in the coming years. The General Urban Plan, prepared in 2007, no longer fully reflects the current realities and needs of Chișinău. In this context, the update aims to adapt urban planning to contemporary challenges through an analysis of the existing situation and the preparation of specialised studies that will provide the foundation for future development proposals.

What will Chișinău look like in 2040, and what measures are needed to protect the city’s historical and natural heritage? As part of the update process of the Chișinău 2040 General Urban Plan, key issues are being addressed, including the preservation of the historic centre, the regulation of new construction, and maintaining a balance between urban development, the protection of built heritage, and the conservation of green spaces. In an interview dedicated to these topics, Mădălina Moțcanu-Dumitrescu, urban planner, representative of the Ion Mincu University of Architecture and Urban Planning in Bucharest, and member of the ARHICON Consortium, explains the importance of updating the General Urban Plan and the role of urban planning regulations in shaping Chișinău’s future.
